According to a report in The Economic Times, food delivery services such as Swiggy, Zomato, and BigBasket may start offering low-alcohol beverages like wine and beer in more states. Currently, only two states, West Bengal and Odisha, allow alcohol delivery to homes. However, the article suggests that six state authorities are considering a trial project after carefully evaluating this initiative. These states include Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Delhi. The move aims to serve a growing expat population, particularly in larger cities, and to meet the changing preferences of consumers who view beverages with moderate alcohol content as a complement to their meals. It also addresses the concerns of women and senior citizens who have raised issues with the traditional liquor purchasing experience. Dinker Vashisht, the vice president of corporate affairs at Swiggy, mentioned that online models ensure age verification, adherence to limits, and comprehensive transaction records. Additionally, online technology aligns with excise and regulatory standards, guaranteeing compliance with schedules, dry days, and distribution boundaries.
